Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken about the crucial role former manager Sir Alex Ferguson had in his decision to re-sign for Manchester United. The 36-year-old Portuguese star’s return to Old Trafford was completed on Tuesday. It was 12 years after he left for Real Madrid and 18 years since he was originally brought to the club by Sir Alex. In his first interview with club media since sealing his move from Juventus, Ronaldo said, “As everybody knows, since I signed for Manchester [United] at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key.”
“I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon. For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me. He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion of course he had a big role because the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person. I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.”
Speaking about his return to Manchester United, Ronaldo said, “Well, as you know, I have a fantastic history with this amazing club. I was there at 18 years old and of course I’m so happy to be back home after 12 years. So I’m really glad and looking forward to start my first game.”
“I think it’s the best decision that I have made it. It’s right on point in my opinion. I moved from Juve now to Manchester, it’s a new chapter, I’m so happy and glad, and I want to carry on again, to make history, to try to help Manchester achieve great results, to win trophies and number one of them, to win great things.”
In an emotional Instagram post recently, Cristiano Ronaldo also reserved a special mention for the legendary former Manchester United boss – Sir Alex. “Everyone who knows me, knows about my never ending love for Manchester United,” Ronaldo said on Instagram. “The years I spent in this club were absolutely amazing and the path we’ve made together is written in gold letters in the history of this great and amazing institution.
“I can’t even start to explain my feelings right now, as I see my return to Old Trafford announced worldwide. It’s like a dream come true, after all the times that I went back to play against Man. United, and even as an opponent, to have always felt such love and respect from the supporters in the stands. This is absolutely 100 per cent the stuff that dreams are made of!
“My first domestic League, my first Cup, my first call to the Portuguese National team, my first Champions League, my first Golden Boot and my first Ballon d’Or, they were all born from this special connection between me and the Red Devils. History has been written in the past and history will be written once again! You have my word!
