Wrexham AFC became the first non-league side to score 15 goals in a single season of the FA Cup (first round onwards) since Bishop Auckland in 1954-55, when Paul Mullin converted a 59th-minute spot-kick to cancel out Anel Ahmedhozic’s 50th-minute opener in the FA Cup fourth round replay on Tuesday night. The Blades scored two late goals, courtesy of injury time efforts from Billy Sharp and Sander Berge, to end the National League outfit’s fairy tale run in the Cup competition. The lowest ranked team remaining in the competition gave a good account of themselves in the two-legged tie, but ended up losing 6-4 on aggregate.

The opening match at Racecourse Ground produced a six goal-thriller, which saw both sides scoring three goals each and forcing a replay.  James Jones, Thomas O’ Connor and Mullin found the back of the net for the English fifth tier side to make the score 3-2 and take them to the edge of progression, but John Egan’s 95th-minute effort rescued Sheffield. Nevertheless it has been a stunning Cup campaign for Wrexham, who reached this far in the tournament courtesy of defeating the likes of Oldham Athletic, Farnborough and Coventry City in the previous round fixtures.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t the first time Wrexham produced shocking results in the FA Cup, having beaten then-english champions Arsenal in the third round in 1992, when playing in the fourth tier. The Red Dragons reached the quarter-finals in the 1996-97 season when they were in the third tier. The Welsh club was purchased by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021 and brought to popularity by a show ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. They are one of the oldest football clubs in the world, formed back in 1864.

As of now, Wrexham are sitting at the second spot in the English fifth tier standings, having collected 68 points from 28 games, three adrift of leaders Notts County, who have played two games more. The Red Dragons are in a good position to earn promotion to the fourth tier of English football, having recorded an impressive 21 league-wins this season. Their latest fifth tier match against Altrincham ended in a 2-1 win courtesy of second half strikes from Ollie Palmer and Eoghan O’Connell. The current manager of the club is Phil Parkison, a 55-year-old who earned 350 caps for Reading before retiring in 2003. Meanwhile the club’s current leading scorer is 24-year-old Mullin, who has already netted a whopping 28 goals across all competitions this season.
