Torino beat Parma 1-0 at the Olimpico di Torino on Monday to boast their chances of survival in the Serie A and confirm Parma’s relegation into Serie B. Mergim Vojvoda’s 63rd minute goal ensured the crucial three points for Torino. It was Parma’s first relegation from Italy’s top division since rebirth in 2015 following bankruptcy. The defeat left them at 19th spot with just 20 points from 34 games. Christian Ansaldi had an excellent game for Torino on the left side with an assist and hitting the post once.

Ansaldi went past three Parma players before delivering a cut back from the left side of the Penalty area for Vojvoda to tap in from close range. The 63rd minute goal turned out to be the only one of the match.

Torino were denied by the woodwork on two occasions. Ansaldi’s thunderous strike from inside the box crashed into the crossbar following a weak punch from Parma goalkeeper Luigi Sepe. Torino striker Andrea Belotti received the ball on the left side of penalty area. He then cut inside the defender before his right footed shot rattled the near post.

Serie A relegation battle

It was Parma’s fifth successive defeat and they are 12 points away from 17th placed Cagiliari with four games remaining.

Parma desperately needed to win on Monday to have any chance of survival since Cagiliari have a better head-to-head record against them. The loss confirmed their relegation along with 20th placed Crotone. Only one relegation is left to be filled.

Torino moved three points away from relegation zone after the win and are placed fifteenth in the points table with 34 points from 33 games. Torino has five games remaining and has a better chance of survival. They will play away to Verona in their next fixture before hosting AC Milan of May 13th.

Parma will next host Atalanta on Sunday before traveling to Lazio on May13th. They will be playing for pride and will want to end their Serie A campaign on a high against Sassuolo and Sampordia in the final two fixtures.
