Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos has been named to the squad for Wednesday’s Champions League Group A match against Manchester City, his first match in over six months. The Spaniard joined PSG on a free transfer in July after leaving Real Madrid after a 16-year career, but he has been unable to play due to a long-running calf injury that has kept him out of most of the previous season and Spain’s Euro 2020 campaign.

However, the 35-year-old has been able to train without interruption for three weeks and has been named in Mauricio Pochettino’s 23-man squad for the trip to City, where his side will be hoping to secure a place in the knockout stage. With two games remaining, PSG is second in Group A with eight points, one behind leader City. Victory would guarantee the French team a place in the next round, while defeat would end their chances of finishing first in their group and being seeded for the last-16 draw.

TOUGH FEW MONTHS FOR RAMOS

The Spaniard is not prone to injuries, and he has managed to stay match fit on a regular basis throughout his career. In his career, he hasn’t had many long-term injuries. As a result, PSG would not have anticipated this situation. Pochettino had hoped to have Ramos available at the start of the season, but a series of setbacks have caused his return dates to be pushed back.

It is learned that Ramos had attempted to push his body despite the medics advising him to take rest at the time. The Spaniard continually faced problems whenever he tried to progress with his leg training. The 35-year-old is known as a warrior on the football field and it is no surprise that he is desperate to get back on the field. However, the PSG medics earlier made it clear that he risks long-term injury if he rushes back.

EARLIER ACTION IN GROUP A

In the previous match week of the UEFA Champions League, Manchester City registered an easy 4-1 win over Club Brugge. Goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, and Gabriel Jesus sealed the win. Joao Cancelo also put in a fine shift, grabbing a hat-trick of assists.

In other Group A action, Paris Saint-Germain was held to a 2-2 draw by RB Leipzig. In the eighth minute, Christopher Nkunku gave Leipzig the lead, but Georginio Wijnaldum scored a first-half brace, his first two goals for the club. PSG led 2-1 at the halftime break. Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury-time penalty, however, ensured Leipzig escaped with a point. PSG is still second in the group, one point behind group leaders City. This was Leipzig’s first point of the campaign, and they remain at the bottom of the table.
