Senegal faced the Netherlands in a Group A match at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Senegal looked solid on paper, even without Sadio Mane, as they went with a 4-3-3 defense of Sabaly, Koulibaly, Cisse, and Diallo. Kouyate, Gueye, and Papy were in midfield, while Diatta, Dia, and Sarr played up front.

With Louis Van Gaal’s assistance, the Netherlands went ahead in a 3-4-1-2 formation with Noppert as their goalkeeper. Ake, Van Dijk and De Ligt all operated in a back three. Blind, De Jong, Berghuis and Dumfries played in the middle, with Gakpo ahead of them. The front two were slotted in with Janssen and Bergwijn.

Janssen started the game for the Dutch but was pulled back by Sarr, who raced down the left. The Netherlands responded by attacking through Gakpo, who fed Bergwijn only to be stopped by the defensive line. On the other hand, Sarr attacked quickly but shot over the crossbar.

Gakpo, Klaassen take down solid Senegal defense in the second half

The Dutch player of the year was flying through the field when his ball just found Blind, who put it wide off Mendy. Bregwijn freed Berghuis, who fed De Jong only to be dispossessed by the Dutch. Janssen then passed one to Berghuis, who smashed it over the bar. Senegal looked strong in defense as it needed some magic to break the backline.

De Jong whipped a peach of a ball into the box, and Gapko slotted it past Mendy to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead late in the second half. The Netherlands sealed the game with a 2-0 lead thanks to Davy Klassen, who slotted the ball into an empty net after Mendy blocked Memphis Depay’s shot.
