Senegal take on Netherlands in a Group A fixture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Al Thumama Stadium on Monday. Both sides have not participated in any warm-up friendlies off late and their last outing was in September, with Senegal playing out a 1-1 draw against Iran, while the Dutch secured a narrow 1-0 win over Belgium in a Nations League game. Netherlands earned an automatic qualification to the finals of the tournament courtesy of securing top spot in Group G of the UEFA qualifiers, while the African outfit got the better of Egypt 3-1 on penalties in the third round of qualifier.

Senegal have suffered a major blow before the World Cup as their talismanic attacker Sadio Mane suffered a fibula injury while representing his club Bayern Munich in a Bundesliga game earlier this month and has been ruled out of the tournament. The African champions are heading into the match on the back of some solid defensive performances. Aliou Cisse’s side have kept six clean sheets in their last eight games. The Lions of Teranga might be looking to keep things tight at the back against the Dutch before going into more winnable fixtures against Qatar and Ecuador. Senegal, who had reached the quarter-finals in South Korea and Japan, 20 years ago, are touted to be one of the dark horses in this edition of the tournament.

Netherlands on the other hand, are making a return to the global stage after a gap of eight years. The Durtch, who finished third in the 2014 edition in Brazil, head into the World Cup in excellent form under Louis Van Gaal. The Dutch are undefeated in their last 17 games across all competitions and have won 12 of them. Netherlands’ latest win against Belgium helped them to take their points tally to 16 from six Nations League games and secure a place in the finals of the competition as League A Group 4 winners. The Dutch are widely regarded as the biggest footballing nations never to win the World Cup, having lost three finals in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
