Scotland will host Ukraine in a UEFA Nations League fixture at the Hampden Park on Wednesday night. Less than four months ago, both sides faced each other in the World Cup playoffs, which Ukraine won 3-1. But the Blue-Yellow went on to lose the final playoff 1-0 against Wales and therefore both sides missed out on a ticket to Qatar. The victory helped Steve Clarke’s side to move to six points from three games and occupy second position in the League B Group 1, just one point behind their Ukrainian counterparts and two ahead of the Republic of Ireland. The Tartan Army got the better of Armenia courtesy of Stuart Armstrong’s brace and one goal each from John McGinn and Che Adams. Scotland’s lone defeat in the Nations League this term, came against Ireland (3-0).
Ukraine, on the other hand, has endured much adversity over the past few months because of the war against Russia. No competitive football has been played in the war-torn nation since December. The Blue-Yellow have made an impressive start to their Nations League campaign, having registered two wins and a draw thus far to be sitting at the summit of the group. In their last match against Ireland in June, Arten Dovbyk canceled out Nathan Collins’ opener to share the spoils.
Scotland captain Andy Robertson is sidelined with an injury, therefore Arsenal-man Kieran Tierney is likely to start at the left-back position. Aston Villa player McGinn is expected to partner McGregor in the middle of the park, with Adams leading the line. As for Ukraine, Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko is nursing a calf injury, while midfielder Mukola Shaparenko is out with an ACL injury. Yaremchuk, Yarmolenko and Mudryk could form the front-three.
Scotland probable starting lineup: Gordon, Hendry, Hanley, McKenna, Patterson, McGinn, McGregor, Tierney, Fraser, Adams, Christie
Ukraine probable starting lineups: Lunin, Karavayev, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Mykolenko, Kovalenko, Sydorchuk, Malinovskyi, Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk, Mudryk.
The UEFA Nations League match between Scotland and Ukraine will take place at Hampden Park on Thursday at 12:15 am IST.
