Romania didn’t have a great start to their 2022 Euro U-19 campaign, losing to Italy on Saturday. Adrian Vasai’s side came out with a defensive game plan against the Azzurri’s, sat back and defended deep and tried to hit the opposition on the counter. Romania’s strategy almost worked as Luca Adronache canceled out Tommaso Baldanzi’s stunning opener early in the first half, but substitute Volpato’s 68th minute strike handed victory to the Italian youngsters. The top two finishers in both groups of this eight-team tournament not only qualify for the semi-finals, but also automatically qualify for the 2023 Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
France on the other hand, announced themselves as one of the title contenders with a five-star victory against the host Slovakia on Saturday. Loum Tchaouna’s early strike set the ball rolling before Ange-Yoan Bonny and Alan Virginius netted a brace each to earn a thumping victory for France. Landry Chauvin’s side are certainly the favourites to top the group, book a spot in the last-four and reach the finals, which takes place on July 1. Champions at U-19 level on three occasions, in 2005, 2010 and in 2016, the French team has an abundance of talent at their disposal.
Romania are expected to continue with their 4-2-3-1 formatcion , despite losing to Italy on Saturday. FC Craiova goalkeeper Robert Popa will captain the side.
