AS Roma will host Cremonese in a Coppa Italia quarter-final fixture at Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of identical Serie A-defeats. The hosts were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan on Saturday, while Roma lost to league-leaders Napoli, with a similar scoreline, a day later. As of now, Roma are occupying sixth spot in the Italian top flight standings, having collected 37 points from 10 games, while the hosts are sitting rock bottom, with just eight points to their name.

Roma’s defeat to Napoli, was their first loss this year, having recorded four wins and a draw in the previous four. Jose Mourinho’s side kicked off Derby del Sole full of confidence, but went behind inside the opening 17 minutes through Victor Osimhen’s opener. Although Stephan El Shaarawy netted the equaliser, fifteen minutes from time, Giovanni Simeone’s 86th-minute strike handed the Little Cubs their fifth league-defeat of the season. Despite the defeat, Roma are still occupying the final European qualification spot, with an eight point lead over the seventh-placed Udinese. Meanwhile, Roma secured a narrow 1-0 win over Genoa in the last-16 stage of the Coppa Italia. Paulo Dybala’s 64th-minute strike separated the two sides and helped Mourinho’s men enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Cremonese, on the other hand, secured a surprise-win over Napoli to book a place in the last-18 stage of Coppa Italia. Grigiorossi came from behind to level the score at 2-2, courtesy of late strikes Carles Pickle’s opener and Felix Afena-Gyan’s late strike, and forced the game into extra time, and then penalties, where they prevailed 5-4. However, when it comes to the Serie A, Davide Ballardini’s men have had a disastrous campaign, having not registered a single victory thus far. Last time out, David Okereke’s 11th-minute strike put Cremonese ahead, before Lautaro Martinez scored a brace for Inter Milan to take all three points and hand a 12th-league defeat to the Tigers.
