Republic of Ireland will host Ukraine in a UEFA Nations League fixture at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday. Both teams have been inconsistent this year and have a point to prove. Both sides are heading to the match on the back of defeats. Ireland made a poor start to their Nations League campaign, losing 1-0 to Armenia. Ukraine, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 loss against Wales last week. Meanwhile Ukraine have a good record against the Boys in Green, winning three out of the six matches played between the two sides. The previous meeting between the two sides ended 1-0 in Ukraine’s favour.

Ireland lost against Armenia courtesy of Eduard Spertsyan’s lone strike in the 74th minute. It was a surprise loss for Stephen Kenny’s side as they came into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw against the mighty Belgium’s and a 1-0 win over Lithuania in international friendlies. In the long run, the Boys in Green have lost only two of their last 13 games. But the manner of the defeat was a brutal reminder of Ireland’s enduring limitations. On a positive note, the Boys in Green are on a six-match undefeated streak in Dublin, and that includes draws with Serbia, Portugal and Belgium.

On the other hand, Ukraine will have to quickly forget their World Cup heartbreak and shift their focus to the upcoming Nations League fixtures. A cruel own goal from Andriy Yarmolenko helped Wales to go through to the finals of the 2022 World Cup. Meanwhile the same player was bizarrely denied a penalty by VAR after Allen hacked his legs, and then Hennessy made a superb save to deny Dovbyk’s header. It was a dramatic night at Cardiff City Stadium but the Dragons had the last laugh. Meanwhile It was Ukraine’s first loss in their last nine games.

Probable Lineups

Ireland are likely to make some changes to their team for the match. Gavin Bazunu and Matt Dohert are currently recovering from injuries and will not be available for selection. James McClean could start at the left-wing-back position, while veteran full-back Seamus Coleman will miss the game because of a groin issue.

Ukraine has a fully-fit squad at the moment with no injury concerns. Petrakov might make some changes to the starting eleven because of the hectic schedule and to refresh things. Eduardo Sobol could return at the left-back position to give some rest to Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Republic of Ireland probable starting lineup: Kelleher; Duffy, Collins, Egan; Coleman, Cullen, Hendrick, McClean; Ogbene, Keane, Robinson
