The French outfit began their pre-season with a narrow 1-0 defeat at SC Freiburg before getting the better of Caen 2-1 and then defeated Nantes in the last game. Last Wednesday, at Leo Lagrange stadium, Serhou Guirassy’s lone goal in the 49th-minute secured the win for Rennes. After the game against Villa, Bruno Genesio’s side will begin their new Ligue 1 campaign at home against Lorient on August 7. Meanwhile Red and Blacks have bolstered their squad for the upcoming season by bringing in veteran French goalkeeper Steve Mandanda on a free transfer from Marseille, while central defender Arthur Theate has joined the club on a permanent deal from Bologna.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, began their pre-season with a dominant 4-0 win over Walsall before getting the better of Leeds United and Brisbane Roar with an identical scorleine of 1-0. And then, shared the spoils against the Red Devils. At the Optus stadium, Manchester United took a two goal lead in the opening half courtesy Jadon Sancho’s opener and Matty Cash’s own goal. After the break, the Claret and Blue managed to pull one back through Leon Bailey before Callum Chambers netted a late equaliser in the injury time. Villa boss Steven Gerrard would be pleased with his side’s performance so far this summer.
Aston Villa boss Gerrard is likely to opt for a strong starting lineup as this Saturday’s game will be their final friendly before beginning the competitive action next week. John McGinn, who has been named the new captain, is likely to retain his place in the midfield alongside Jacob Ramsey and summer-signing Kamara. Meanwhile, Philipe Coutinho and Ollie Watkis are expected to join Danny Ings up front. As for Rennes, central defender Warmed Omari is sidelined with injury, therefore youngsters Guela Doue and Noah Francoise could be handed starts in the heart of the defence. Martin Terrier, who scored 21 goals last season could lead the line along with Laborde.
Rennes probable starting lineup: Alemdar; Traore, Doue, Francoise, Meling; Santamaria, Tait; Bourigeaud, Majer, Terrier, Laborde
Aston Villa probable starting lineup: Martinez; Cash, Carlos, Mings, Digne; Kamara; McGinn, Ramsey; Coutinho; Watkins, Ings
