Real Madrid will have the opportunity to get their hands on the first piece of European silverware this campaign when they face Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. Los Blancos survived a hard-fought tactical battle against Liverpool in the Champions League final, while Frankfurt prevailed in a penalty shootout over Rangers in the Europa League final. The clash at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki will undoubtedly have Real Madrid as favourites. Notably, Eintracht Frankfurt’s thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich over the weekend would not have been ideal preparation for this clash.

Nonetheless, the one comfort the German side can take is that they have already begun their domestic season. They overcame FC Magdeburg 4-0 in the first round of DFB Pokal. However, the 6-1 defeat at home to Bayern would be a major cause for concern, particularly before a big match against the defending Spanish champions on Wednesday. Hence, Eintracht Frankfurt will have to regroup from that defeat and be at the top of its game to get something out of the match at the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki.

On the other hand, Real Madrid will be heading into their first competitive game of the season on the back of mixed pre-season results. Having narrowly lost to Barcelona, they drew 2-2 with Club America before beating Juventus 2-0. Nonetheless, they will take a lot of confidence from their inspired run-in to lift their 14th Champions League crown at the end of last season. Los Blancos defeated Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City on their way to the title match before edging out Liverpool to lift the coveted European trophy.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid have made a couple of eye-catching signings in the summer window. The arrival of promising young midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and German centre-back Antonio Rudiger would have got the fans excited. It is not clear whether the pair will be handed their competitive debuts on Wednesday, but they are more likely to be involved at some point in the match. They do not have any fresh injury concerns, which could help Carlo Ancelotti name a strong starting line-up. Meanwhile, defender Jerome Onguene will miss the clash for Frankfurt with an injury. He is set to join Aurelio Buta on the sidelines. They will also have to make do without Filip Kostic, with the left-back inching closer to a Juventus move.

Real Madrid possible line-up: Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Mendy; Kroos, Casemiro, Tchouameni, Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr, Benzema

Eintracht Frankfurt possible line-up: Trapp, Toure, Ndicka, Tuta, Knauff, Rode, Sow, Lenz, Lindstrom, Gotze, Borre
