One of the most anticipated fixtures in world football will take place at Bernabeu on Sunday with Real Madrid hosting Barcelona for the first el clasico of the season. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of Champions League draws in the mid-week. The hosts were held to a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk, while Barcelona played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter Milan at home. Both teams have collected 22 points from their opening eight matches of the 2022-23 La Liga season, with Barcelona at the helm of the table due to their superior goal-difference.

Real Madrid were lucky to earn a point against Shakhtar on Tuesday. Oleksandr Zubokv broke the deadlock immediately after the break and the Ukrainian outfit looked set to cause an upset until Antonio Rudiger found the equaliser, five minutes into the injury time. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted that he was disappointed with his team’s display in the European affair, but the point was enough for the reigning European champions to book their spot in the knockout round of the competition with two games to spare. Prior to that, Los Blancos secured a narrow 1-0 win over Getafe in a league fixture courtesy of Edr Militao’s 3rd-minute goal.  It was Real Madrid’s seventh La Liga win of the campaign.

Barcelona, on the other hand, have also registered seven league wins thus far. Their latest victory came against Celta Vigo last weekend, courtesy of Pedri’s lone goal, inside the opening seventeen minutes. After that, the Blaugrana played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter on Wednesday. Ousname Dembele opened the scoring before Robert Lewandowski netted a brace to help the Catalan outfit earn a point at home. The result left Barcelona at the third spot in Group C, three points behind second-placed Inter, who only need to beat Viktoria Plzen at home next time out to ensure a spot in the last-16 of the Champions League.
