Real Betis and Barcelona will go head-to-head in a Spanish Super Cup semi-final match at King Fahd International Stadium in Saudi Arabia on Thursday night. Meanwhile, The tournament features four teams: the top two teams in the previous season’s La Liga and the winners and runner-ups from Copa del Rey. Barcelona finished second in the 2021-22 La Liga standings, while Betis won the Copa del Rey title. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in their respective La Liga games on Sunday. Betis secured a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, while Blaugrana edged past Atletico Madrid 1-0. Barcelona are currently occupying top spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 41 points from 16 games, while the Green and Whites are sitting three places behind them, with 28 points to their name.

Since returning from the World Cup break, Betis have won two of their three games across all competitions, starting with a goalless La Liga draw against Athletic Bilbao followed by back-to-back away wins over IbizaIslas Pitiusas and Rayo Vallecano. Last time-out, Manuel Pellegrini’s side secured all three points against Rayo Vallecano, courtesy of an own goal by Ivan Balliu, inside the opening seven minutes, and Luis Henrique’s 40th-minute strike. Meanwhile, Los Verdiblancos’ only other Super Cup was against Barcelona in a two-legged final losing the first match 3-0 before winning 2-1 in the second leg but ultimately lost 4-2 on aggregate.
Barcelona, on the other hand, lost out to Real Madrid in the last edition of the tournament. This time around, Blaugrana are the favourites to lift their first piece silverware under the tutelage of Xavi. Barca are heading into the match on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run across all competitions. Just like their Thursday’s opponents, Barca resumed competitive action with a draw away to Espanyol, before getting the better of Inter City 4-3 in a Copa del Rey match and then defeating Atletico Madrid. Ousmane Dembele’s lone goal inside the opening 22 minutes separated the two sides at Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

Real Betis full-back Youssouf Sabaly is nursing an ankle injury, while defensive midfielder Paul Akouokou is sidelined with a muscle problem. Iglesias is expected to lead the line, with Henrique, Fekir and Rodri in support. As for Barcelona, forward Ferran Torres is suspended after receiving a red card against Atletico Madrid in the last outing. Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski and Jordi Alba are back after serving bans last time out. Captain Sergio Busquets will run the engine alongside Pedri and Gavi.
