Kingsley Coman scored a last-gasp equalizer as Bayern Munich rescued a 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg in the Champions League last-16 first leg fixture at Red Bull Arena Salzburg on Wednesday. The substitute Chukwubuike Adama had put the Austrian outfit ahead inside the opening 21 minutes and it looked as if the six-time European champions would see their record unbeaten away run in the competition end at 21 games. But Coman netted in the 90th minute to salvage a draw.

The underdogs Salzburg started the match in brisk fashion, but it was Bayern who went close to scoring when Serge Gnabry tested Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Kohn inside the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts did break the deadlock in the 21st minute when Karim Adeyemi drove at the home defence and Brenden Aaronson touched the ball into the path of Adamu. The Nigerian, on as a 12th-minute substitute for the injured Noah Okafor, made no mistake as he swept home past Sven Ilreich in the Bayern goal.

The hosts grew in confidence after the goal and Aaronson soon forced a fine low save from Ulreich before Karim Adeyemi fell theatrically inside the box and appealed for a penalty. But the English referee Michael Oliver ruled there was no contact from the Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard.

Leroy Sane flashed a shot wide at the other end and Bayern began to control the game after the break. The visitors came out with more intent and dominated the second half. Kohn denied Coman and Sane as Bayern pushed hard for the equaliser.

Coman’s equaliser

Salzburg was playing in the Champions League knockout stage for the first time, and the home team showed no sign of fear against the German giants. Ulreich thwarted Adeyemi and the outstretched Pavard brilliantly blocked Adamu’ follow up effort in the 81st minute.

The visitors finally got the equaliser in the last minute of regulation time,  when Coman, who had scored the winner against PSG in the 2020 final, latched on to Thomas Muller’s flick before firing home at the far post.

“It wasn’t enough in the first half. Salzburg came up with dangerous counterattacks. We controlled it better in the second half,” said Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich. “The team realized we wanted to win the game. That we can is not in question. We have to bring that on the field in every game. We’re not in a flow where everything just happens.”
