RB Leipzig will host Liverpool in a pre-season friendly at Red Bull Arena on Thursday evening. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in their recent outings. The hosts defeated Southampton 3-1 last Saturday, while the Reds got the better of Crystal Palace 2-0 a day earlier. Leipzig began their pre-season on a promising note. Angelino, Emil Forsberg and Ilaix Moriba got on the scoresheet for the Red Bulls, while Adam Armstrong netted a consolation goal for the Saints. Apart from earning a Champions League qualification, Dominico Tedesco’s side won the DFB-Pokal title last term. After the game against Liverpool, the German outfit will take on Bayern Munich in the DFB-supercup final on July 31 before beginning their 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign against VFB Stuttgart at Mercedes-Benz Arena on August 7.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will also play RB Salzburg before facing off against Manchester City in the FA community Shield final on July 30. Jurgen Klopp’s side will then play one more friendly against Strasbourg before beginning their new Premier League campaign against Fulham on August 6. Meanwhile the Reds didn’t have a great start to their pre-season, conceding four goals against Manchester United without giving any reply on July 12. However, Klopp’s side quickly got their acts together to register their first win of the summer, courtesy of goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah, last Friday. Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez has been the only big signing Liverpool completed this summer while Sadio Mane departed the club to join Bayern Munich.Â
Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol is sidelined with a thigh injury , while Danis striker Yussuf Poulsen is also recovering from a muscular problem. Tedesco is likely to rotate the squad in order to build the fitness of the team. Peter Gulcasi is expected to start in goal while Alexander Sorloth is likely to lead the attack in the absence of Poulsen. As for Liverpool, number one goalkeeper Alisson Becker is unavailable due to an abdominal problem, while attacking midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is nursing a muscular injury. Mohamed Salah , Nunez and Luis Diaz should form the three-man attack with Thiago providing the creative spark in the midfield.
RB Leipzig probable starting lineup: Gulcasi; Klostermann, Simakan, Orban; Mukiele, Haidara, Kampl, Halstenberg; Nkunku, Forsberg; Sorloth
Liverpool probable starting lineup: Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Tsimikas; Elliott, Henderson; Thiago; Salah, Nunez, Diaz.
The pre-season friendly match between RB Leipzig and Liverpool will take place at Red Bull Arena on Thursday at 10:45 pm IST.
