The opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to kickoff at the Al Bayt Stadium, with the host nation Qatar taking on Ecuador in a Group A fixture on Sunday. The other two teams in the group are Netherlands and African champions Senegal. The Asian outfit are competing on the biggest stage of international football for the first time in their history, while Ecuador make their return to the World Cup finals for the first time in eight years. Qatar are heading into the match on the back of a 1-0 win over Albania in a friendly last week, while La Tri were held to a goalless draw against Iraq last Saturday.

As host nation, Qatar earned a direct qualification to the finals of the tournament. The 50th ranked team in the world has taken part in four warm up friendlies since October and have recorded wins in all of them. Their latest outing against Albania on November 9 ended in a 1-0 win courtesy of Almoez Ali S 37th-minute goal. The Maroon are now aiming to become the first World Cup debutants to win their opening match since Senegal beat defending champions France in 2002.

Ecuador, on the other hand, have already participated in three editions of the tournament in 2002, 2006 and 2014, but only once have they reached the knockout stage and that was 16 years ago in Germany, but La Tri lost 1-0 to England.  After failing to qualify for the 2018 edition in Russia, the South American outfit secured a fourth place finish in the CONMEBOL qualifiers to earn a spot in the group stages of the tournament four years later. Gustavo Alfaro’s side have been solid at the back, having recorded six clean sheets from as many games since June, but they have only found the back of the net twice themselves.
