The Premier League witnessed an intense battle for European places in the recently concluded season. For a while, it looked as though the fight for the top spot will be the one to look out for. However, a monumental collapse by Arsenal allowed Manchester City to leapfrog the North London side and defend their league crown. Hence, the real battle was for the European places. Leaving the top two positions aside, the fight was on for the remaining five spots. There were plenty of twists and turns along the way, which saw some teams take giant leaps, while others crumbled like a pack of cards. Let us look at the clubs that have qualified for the European competitions.

Champions League

The battle for the Champions League was one of the most intriguing ones the Premier League has seen in a while. With the top two teams – Manchester City and Arsenal – racing away from the rest, the main fight was for the remaining two places. There were quite a lot of changes for the final two top four positions over the course of the season. For most parts, Manchester United and Newcastle United were leading the way in the top four race.

However, there were periods when other clubs pushed them to the limit. In the first half of the campaign, Tottenham Hotspur were in the mix, making it hard for the Red Devils and Newcastle to run away with those two places. However, Spurs lost their way in the business end of the season. At this point, Liverpool put up a valiant effort, as they registered an impressive run of results. After overcoming few nervous moments, Manchester United and Newcastle United secured the third and fourth places in the table respectively.

Europa League

Several teams were involved in the battle for Europa League places at one point or another. Some teams fell apart soon, while others kept chasing those places till the very end. Finally, Liverpool and Brighton secured the two Europa League spots. This is not the competition the Reds would have wanted to have at the start of last season, however, their poor run of results meant it is the best they can afford. On the other hand, Brighton will be extremely happy to secure a European place, as it is not something many would have anticipated them to achieve before the season had commenced.

Europa Conference League

The club that finishes seventh in the Premier League will reach the Europa Conference League qualifiers. Teams that finish in the top six positions qualify directly to the group stage, however, for the seventh-placed team alone qualifiers are needed. This place was also occupied by several teams over the course of the league season. In the end, it was a direct battle between in-form Aston Villa and an inconsistent Tottenham Hotspur side. At the end of the final matchday, Aston Villa secured the final European spot in the Premier League standings.
