A Mason Greenwood double helped Manchester United defeat Burnley 3-1 in the English Premier League on Sunday. Edinson Cavani scored the other goal for the Red Devils at Old Trafford. The night, however, belonged to Greenwood who is now the joint-top scoring teenager in Premier League for Manchester United with 15 goals. The fifth straight English Premier League victory moves second-placed United within eight points of leaders Manchester City. Burnley, however, dropped to 17th position in the table – six points above safety.

The Red Devils were extremely lucky early in the game. Known for their slow starts, United went behind yet again, only for Burnley’s goal to be ruled offside. Racing out to meet a long ball, Dean Henderson was beaten in the air by Chris Wood, who looped a header into the net. Luckily, Wood was in an offside position and United survived.

Burnley, unbeaten at Old Trafford in four games, made life difficult for the home side since then. Barring couple of threatening moments, the visitors were relatively comfortable in the first half. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer introduced Cavani at half-time in place of Fred. The Uruguayan gave Manchester United something which they were missing in the first half – a focal point.

Greenwood’s night

However, it was Greenwood who opened the scoring immediately after the break. After nice work by Marcus Rashford on the left-side, Bruno Fernandes made a nice dummy to leave the ball for Greenwood to slot it home from close range.

Manchester United’s joy was short lived. Couple of minutes later, James Tarkowski rose above Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to head home the equaliser from a corner.

The home side struggled to find the rhythm of their recent outings. A Fernandes header from Luke Shaw’s brilliant cross was saved by Peacock-Farrell. With the clock ticking, Greenwood came to the rescue again.

After cutting from the right-side, Greenwood fired one with his left-foot into a crowded penalty box. The shot took a wicked deflection to sneak behind the unfortunate goalkeeper. The young English striker is now the joint-top scoring teenager in Premier League history for Manchester United with 15 goals. He is level with former striker Wayne Rooney.

United could have sealed the three points but Peacock-Farrell brilliantly denied Scott McTominay before Fernandes’ shot was blocked off the line. The third goal finally came in injury time.

After a good counter-attacking move, substitute Van de Beek found himself free on the left of the penalty box. He squared the ball for Cavani to tap in. This is Cavani’s fourth goal as a substitute for United in the Premier League this season.
