Promising young Manchester City attacking-midfielder Phil Foden has won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award for the 2020-21 season. The 21-year-old English sensation played a crucial role as City asserted its domestic dominance in this campaign. Apart from winning the league title, Pep Guardiola’s side also won a fourth successive Carabao Cup. They also reached the Champions League final before losing it out to Chelsea 0-1 in Porto.

A vital cog in Manchester City’s squad, Foden has made 28 league appearances and registered nine goals and five assists. He also played a pivotal role in his team’s impressive run in the other competitions. Foden was touted as the next big thing for a while now and it was this season where he got regular minutes on the pitch to showcase his ability. Thanks to his impressive club form, the 21-year-old has been selected for the European Championship duty with England.

A Premier League statement read, “The 21-year-old starred as Manchester City won the title for a third time in four seasons. One of his standout performances came in the 4-1 victory at 2019-20 champions Liverpool, when he scored one goal and set up another.”

The Premier League also laid down the criteria to make a player eligible for this award. “Foden is only the second player to receive the accolade, following in the footsteps of inaugural recipient Trent Alexander-Arnold. To be eligible for the prize, players had to be aged 23 or under at the start of the 2020/21 campaign. The midfielder topped an eight-player shortlist, having won the most combined votes from the public and a Premier League panel,” it added.

“He becomes Man City’s fourth 2020/21 season awards winner. Ruben Dias and Guardiola were today confirmed as the EA SPORTS Player and Barclays Manager of the Season respectively, while Liam Delap was named PL2 Player of the Season.”

Manchester City thoroughly dominated the awards. Their star defender Ruben Dias was named the Premier League Player of the Season, while manager Pep Guardiola bagged the Premier League Manager of the Season award.

In a season where City won the league title by 12 points with utter dominance, this is the perfect reward for their players. With the Euros on the horizon, their players can be expected to make a mark for their respective countries in the continental tournament as well.
