Palmeiras will host Cerro Porteno in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16 fixture at Allianz Parque on Wednesday. The first leg at General Pablo Rojas finished 3-0 in favour of Palmeiras courtesy of Rony’s brace and Murillo Cerqueira’s late strike. Therefore it would require a significant collapse from the hosts for Cerro Porteno to advance into the last-8 of the continental championship. Meanwhile Palmeiras are heading into the tie on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Atletico-PR in the Brazilian League last Saturday, while the Paraguayan outfit got the better of Tacuary in their domestic league fixture.

Palmeiras have been in stunning form this season, winning eight of their opening 15 league games to sit at the summit of the standings, while winning all six of their Copa Libertadores Group A matches to cruise through to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, last Saturday, Abel Ferreira’s side displayed a pretty good performance, registering 35 attempts on goal with seven of them on target, but failed to find the back of the net against a resolute Atletico-PR defence. It was only their second defeat of the season. Their wingers, centre-forwards and wing-backs often interchange their positions, creating confusion for the opposition defenders.

Cerro Porteno, on the other hand made it this far in the competition, courtesy of a second place finish in Group G. Meanwhile, a place in the quarter-finals at the moment looks bleak. Francisco Arce’s men were simply outclassed by the Brazilian outfit in the home leg. The Paraguayan club failed to register even a single shot on target last Wednesday and were pushed to the back foot for a major part of the game. El Azulgrana were the last side to defeat Palmeiras in this round of the competition, edging past them 1-0 at Allianz Parque in 2018, though falling 2-1 on aggregate.
