Manchester United travel to the City Ground for the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinals against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night. Even though United will be the favourites on the paper, this contest will not be a straight-forward affair for the visitors. Besides, the recent disappointments would act as a catalyst in helping Erik ten Hag’s side to bounce back in this contest in order to get the win. However, they have to be at the top of their game to get anything out of this match.

Conceding two late goals in their last two matches has cost Manchester United important points in their push to reach Champions League football. After Crystal Palace scored late against them to get a 1-1 draw, Arsenal won the weekend thriller in the dying seconds at Emirates Stadium. Erik ten Hag would have been left frustrated with the manner in which United conceded those goals. However, the Red Devils will be eager now to quickly get back to winning ways and what better way to respond than in a cup semifinal.

As things stand, Manchester United are sitting fourth in the Premier League table with 39 points from 20 matches. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are sitting 13th with 21 points from 20 games. After struggling in the bottom three places for long periods, Nottingham have done well to steer clear of the relegation zone in recent weeks. They would now look to keep the league duties aside and concentrate on producing a major cup shock.

These two clubs have faced each other on several occasions over the years. However, if the fixtures are narrowed down to the EFL Cup, there are very little games that has taken place between them. Both clubs have faced each other three times in this competition and Manchester United have won them all. One of those contests was the 1992 final when United edged past Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Even though that contest had happened a long time ago, Nottingham Forest faithful would remember that game. They would be keen to get a revenge on Manchester United when these two sides face each other in the two-legged semifinal. However, Nottingham will be well aware of the difficult task at hand. The priority for them would be to stay alive in the tie till deep into the second leg and from there on anything would be possible.
