Northern Ireland and Cyprus will be up against each other again after a frustrating 0-0 draw last weekend in the UEFA Nations League. The former will go into the fixture at the Windsor Park as the favourites but recent results have haltered their progress. Both the nations find themselves at the bottom of group C2 with a solitary point each, with half of the matches having already being played. A defeat for either of these teams will more or less confirm their relegation to tier four. Undoubtedly the match in Belfast carries huge significance for the two countries as they try to reverse their fortunes.

Northern Ireland were initially regarded as the favourites to top the group with a good run of form coming into the Nations League. They even managed a draw against the European Champions, Italy last November. However, to the surprise of many their form has badly capitulated and now the nation finds itself struggling for survival in group C2.  The Northern Ireland manager, Ian Baraclough now inevitably finds himself amidst heavy criticism and even calls to relive him of the coaching duties. They have only managed to collect a point so far in the group in the reverse fixture against Cyprus while the other two fixtures against Greece and Kosovo have ended in defeats.

Cyprus, on the other hand, didn’t commence their Nations League campaign with much expectations and so has been the case. They sit at the bottom of the group still awaiting their first goal having already conceded five in their defeats against Kosovo and Greece. Nikos Kostenoglou’s side last tasted victory away from home almost three years back in October of 2019 against Kazakhstan. However, Cyprus will go into the match knowing that all the pressure is on the hosts which may very well play in their favour.

Possible Lineups

Having missed out in the last match against Kosovo, Northern Ireland’s Paddy McNair still seems unlikely to make it in time for the match against Cyprus. However, purely based on performances, changes can be very well expected by Ian Baraclough with the possible inclusions of Dion Charles and Conor Bradley in attack and defence respectively. Another headache for the Northern Ireland coach will be the dilemma to select either of Niall McGinn or Conor McMenamin at left-wing back. As for, Cyprus, Konstantinos Laifis and Demetri Christofi could make their way back into the starting XI as Cyprus aim to upset the hosts.

Northern Ireland possible line-up: Peacock-Farrell, Brown, Ballard, Evans, Bradley, McCann, Davis, Saville, McMenamin, Lavery, Charles

Cyprus possible line-up: Michael, Gogic, Correa, Laifis, Pittas, Artymatas, Kyriakou, Ioannou, Loizou, Christofi, Tzionis
