Manchester United had a surprisingly busy January transfer window this time around. It is not a club that prefers doing business in the winter transfer window, as they complete most of their task in the summer itself. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial exit towards the end of last year followed by Christian Eriksen’s lengthy injury crisis meant the Red Devils had to invest in the January transfer window. In came Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer to solve the issues up front and in the middle of the park.

However, both arrived only on loan basis and not permanently. Weghorst was loaned out from English second division club Burnley, while Sabitzer arrived from German giants Bayern Munich. They both have already played an important part in helping the club maintain a brilliant run of late which saw them defeat Barcelona in the Europa League knockout round and lift the EFL Cup at the weekend. This has prompted many supporters and pundits to speculate on the future of these two players’ future with the club beyond this season.

Ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup match against West Ham United, manager Erik ten Hag was asked whether these two players will be there at Old Trafford next season. The manager, as quoted by the official club website, replied, “I think it is much too quick [to decide]. [It is] much too soon to talk about that. First, we are in this season and that is where the focus has to be. No distractions for what is coming next season. Only the season we are in. We are in the right position at this moment, this is the position we want to be as we are now competing in three leagues [competitions].”

Erik ten Hag gives update on Anthony Martial’s return date

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has been frequently injured this season, leaving the club a bit short-handed up front. It is unclear when the Frenchman will return from his latest injury setback. Ten Hag was asked if Martial will play before the March internationals. He responded, “I hope but I won’t give a prospective [time] or an expectation about that. [I will] let him do his work as several times now he has been back and he drops back too quickly.”

He added: “So we [have to] give him the time and I hope he is [then] on board [as available again], but first, in this moment, we are doing really well in the set-up. When he is available, we will have another option, a good option. Let’s give him the time and we will see when he is back. Then we will be happy because we have a quality option extra for the rest of the season.”
