Two sides struck in the Premier League relegation zone will face off on Sunday when West Ham United host Southampton at London Stadium. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 4-0 win over AEK Larnaca in the second leg of their Europa Conference League last -16 tie before the international break, while Southampton played out a thrilling 3-3 league-draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The visitors are currently languishing at the bottom of the English top tier standings, having collected just 23 points from 28 games, while the Hammers, who have two games in hand, are sitting one place above the Saints, separated by a solitary point, and two points away from safety.

Despite all the struggles in the league, West Ham have fared well in Europe, reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League. The Hammers’ last outing saw them put four goals past AEK Larnaca in Europe’s third tier competition, courtesy of Gianluca Scamacca’s 20th-minute opener, Jarrod Bowen’s second half brace and a 65th-minute effort from David Mubama. The result helped David Moyes’ side to secure a 6-0 aggregate win and book a meeting with Belgium giants Gent in the last eight stage. Prior to the continental-win, West Ham played out a 1-1 draw against Aston villa in the league, thanks to Said Benrahma’s 26th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot.
Southampton, on the other hand, were involved in a six-goal thriller at St. Mary’s Stadium on March 18, in their last outing. Che Adams canceled out Pedro Porro’s opener before Harry Kane restored Spurs’ lead and Ivan Perisic made the score 3-1. Just when Southampton were staring down a barrel of defeat, Theo Walcott reduced the deficit before Ainsly Maitland-Niles was felled by Pape Sarr inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Ward-Prowse stepped up and clinically found the top corner to make the score 3-3. Meanwhile, the reverse fixture in October ended in a 1-1 draw after Southampton took the lead through Romain Perraud’s 20th-minute effort, before Declan Rice leveled the score four minutes into the hour-mark.
