The hosts were thrashed 3-0 by Belgium on Friday, while Azerbaijan suffered a 4-1 defeat to Austria in their opening match of Group F. With Belgium clear favourites to top Group F, Sweden and Austria are expected to battle for the second automatic qualifying spot. Blagult conceded three times against the Red Devils, courtesy of Romelu Lukaku’s hat-trick. Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his long awaited comeback in a Sweden shirt at the age of 41 years but the AC Milan striker couldn’t make an impact. It was Sweden’s first defeat in their last five outings, having recorded four consecutive friendly-wins prior to this defeat. The Blue and Yellow have never failed to qualify for the European Championship since the Euro 1996, having reached the last-16 stage last time out at Euro 2020, before being knocked out by Ukraine.
Azerbaijan, on the other hand, have never qualified for a major tournament as an independent nation. Milli were beaten by Austria in their last outing, courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer’s brace and one goal each from Michael Gregoritsch and Christoph Baumgartner. Gianni de Biasi’s side scored a consolation goal through Emin Mahmudov’s 64th-minute effort. The result ended their five-game winning streak in all competitions.
