Sheffield United will be looking to get back to winning ways in the EFL Championship when they travel to Stadium on Light on Wednesday to take on Sunderland. The visitors are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Luton Town this weekend, while Sunderland edged past Norwich City 1-0, on the same day. Despite the loss, the Blades are occupying second spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 67 points from 36 games, just three clear of third-placed Middlesbrough, who have played an extra match, and 13 adrift of leaders Burnley. Sunderland, meanwhile, are sitting at the 12th position, with 52 points to their name, six shy of the top-six.

After three consecutive defeats in the second tier, Sunderland got back to winning ways at Carrow Road this Saturday. Abdoullah Ba’s stunning long range goal inside the opening 15 minutes separated the two sides in Norwich and handed the Black Cats their 14th league-win of the campaign. With 10 league-games remaining top play, Tony Mowbray’s men are certainly not in the driving seat but still have a chance of achieving successive promotions.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, are going through a bit of a rough patch, having lost four of their last six outings in the second tier. The poor run of form has allowed Boro to close the gap on the Blades to just three points, and any more slip ups could prove to be costly for Sheffield United. Last time out, Paul Heckingbottom’s side lost to Luton at home, courtesy of Carlton Morris’ lone goal in the 53rd-minute. The Blades had more than 60% of ball possession and attempted five shots on target, but failed to break down a resolute Luton defence, while the Hatters scored from their only shot of target.
Sunderland striker Ross Stewart is sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury, while Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo is doubtful for Wednesday fixture because of a hamstring issue. Gelhardt will continue to lead the line, with Clarke and Neil occupying the flannels. As for Sheffield United, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Rhian Brewster and Jack O’Connel are occupying the treatment. The Forward pairing of Iliman Ndiaye and Oli McBurnie, who have 22 Championship goals between them this term so far, are likely to start up front.
Sunderland Probable line-up: Patterson, Hume, Ballard, Batth, O’Nien, Neil, Michut, Roberts, Ba, Clarke, Gelhardt
Sheffield United Probable line-up: Foderingham, Bogle, Egan, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Lowe, Berge, Norwood, Doyle, Ndiaye, McBurnie
