South Korea started their 2022 World Cup group stage with a goalless draw against Uruguay before losing 3-2 to Ghana in one of the most exciting games of the tournament. The Asian Warriors needed three points against Portugal in their final group-match to go through to the knockout rounds and they secured that in a dramatic fashion, thanks to Kim Young-gwon’s 27th-minute equaliser and Hwan Hee Chan’s winner one minute into the injury time. While their run in the tournament came to an end after the disappointing loss to Brazil in the round of 16 fixture, Taeguk Warriors can take plenty of confidence from their performances. Meanwhile Paul Bento stepped down from the manager post immediately after the World Cup and therefore Jurgen Klinsmann’s era in charge of South Korea will get kick started this week since being named the new boss in February.
Colombia, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar after finishing sixth in the CONMEBOL Qualification table. The top four teams in the standings earn direct qualification to the global event, while the fifth-placed side go through to the inter-continental playoff. The Tricolors ended their South American qualification campaign with a 1-0 win over Venezuela, thanks to James Rodriguez’s effort on the stroke of half-time, back in March last year. The Coffee Growers’ most recent match ended in a goalless draw against USA. It was their third consecutive clean sheet and the result extended their unbeaten run to three matches. after the game against South Korea, Colombia will play Japan next week.
