Slovan Bratislava will host Basel in the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League last-16 tie at Tehelne Pole on Thursday. The first leg in Switzerland last week ended in a 2-2 draw, therefore both sides know that a victory in Slovakia will take them through to the quarter-finals of Europe’s third tier tournament. Last Thursday at St Jakob-Park, the Slovakian club twice came from behind to earn a draw. Jurij Medvedev canceled out Zeki Amdouni’s early opener, before Andy Zeqiri restored Basel’s lead with a 40th-minute strike, and then Malik Abubakari’s 70th-minute effort made the score 2-2.

Three days after the hard-fought draw, Slovan Bratislava suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to MSK Zilina in the Slovak Super Lig, courtesy of dominik Javorcek’s first-half effort. It was their fifth league-defeat of the season. Vladimir Weiss’s side are currently occupying second spot in the Slovakian top flight standings, having collected 47 points from 23 games, four adrift of the summit.
Basel, on the other hand, are languishing at the sixth position in the Swiss Super League table, with 31 points to their name from 24 games, 20 adrift of leaders Young Boys and three shy of the top-four. On Sunday, RotBlau came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against St. Gallen in the league, thanks to Andi Zeqiri’s 82nd-minute equaliser. Meanwhile, Heiko Vogel’s men are unbeaten in their last three away fixtures across all competitions.
Abubakari, who scored the second equaliser for Slovan in Switzerland last week will continue to lead the line, with Giorgi Chakvetadze and Aleksandar Cavric occupying the flanks. Juraj Kucka and Filip Lichy could sit in front of the defence. As for Basel, Amdouni might spearhead the attack, with Zeqiri and Dan Ndoye in support. Meanwhile defender Fabian Frei is sidelined with a back injury.
