EFL Championship side Sheffield United stunned Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur to progress to the quarter-finals of FA Cup. Iliman Ndiaye’s lone goal eleven minutes from time, sent Spurs crashing out of the Cup competition. Champions League challengers Tottenham, who started the match with Harry Kane on the bench, looked off the pace as they struggled to test the home goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. Paul Heckingbottom’s side, who are occupying second spot in the English second tier standings, managed to hold on to the slender lead and secured a famous win in front of a packed Bramall Lane.

Tottenham attacker, Son Heung-min recorded the first effort on goal inside the opening 15 minutes, but the South Korean’s curler from the right channel was comfortably collected by the home goalkeeper Foderingham. Thirteen minutes later, Richarlison, who spearheaded the attack, in place of Kane, timed his run to perfection to get on the end of Davinson Sanchez’s through ball, but the Brazilian fired over the bar from close range. Three minutes before the break, at the other end, a poor defensive header from Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg allowed Ismaila Coulibaly to go clear on goal, but the midfielder skewed a shot into the side-netting.

Iliman Ndiaye’s winner

Spurs started the second half with some purpose and Ivan Perisic’s header from Son’s corner went straight to the goalkeeper. And then, Son could not find the target after creating room for himself on the edge of the area. But as the match progressed, the Blades began to come into the game more. Cristian Stellini, who was in charge of Tottenham in the absence of manager Antonio Conte, introduced Kane in place of Richarlison in the 65th minute. But the English striker’s arrival didn’t help Spurs regain their nerves as Pedro Porro curled wide after Hojbjerg’s long ball sent him clear.

In the 79th-minute, some sloppy defending from Sanchez and Porro allowed Ndiaye to wriggle his way past multiple defenders in the left side of the box and fire a low shot in at the near post. Conceding a goal at the first post did not cover Forster in much glory. The Blades held on to the slender lead and reached the last eight for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, Spurs’ trophy-drought will now stretch beyond 15 years and they have now exited the Premier domestic cup competition at the fifth round stage for the fourth successive year.
