Scotland will host Cyprus in their opening match of the Euro 2024 qualifier at Hampden Park on Saturday. This will be the opening match of Group A, consisting the likes of Cyprus, Georgia, Scotland, Norway and Spain. Both sides were previously involved in friendlies in November last year, with the hosts losing 2-1 to Turkey, while Cyprus got the better of Israel 3-2. Meanwhile, the previous meeting between these two nations was back in 2019, which ended 2-1 in favour of Scotland, thanks to goals from Ryan Christie and John McGinn, either side of Georgios Efrem’s equaliser.

After missing out on World Cup qualification courtesy of losing the playoff 3-1 to Ukraine, the Tartan Army had an impressive UEFA Nations League campaign, recording four wins, a draw and a defeat from six games to finish at the top of League B Group 1, with 13 points to their name. Meanwhile Steve Clarke’s side ended the year with a 2-1 friendly-defeat to Turkey, despite the fact that McGinn got on the scoresheet. Spain would be the favourties to secure top spot in the group, while Scotland and Norway are expected to fight it out for the second spot.
Cyprus, on the other hand, would be aiming to give a good account of themselves and not finish at the bottom of the table. This is still a new era under Temur Ketsbaia, who was appointed as head coach at the end of June, and the 55-year-old tactician’s early fixtures produced two eye-catching results. a 1-0 win over Greece in the Nations League and a 3-2 friendly-victory at Israel last time out. The White and Blues got the better of Israel at HaMoshava Stadium, courtesy of first-half efforts from Champali Charalampos and Ioannis Pittas, and Nikolas Ioannou’s 82nd-minute winner.
