Roma will be looking to seal their place in the quarter-finals of UEFA Europa League when they travel to Reale Arena on Thursday night to take on Real Sociedad in the second leg of their last-16 tie. The first leg at Stadio Olimpico last Thursday ended 2-0 in favour Roma, courtesy of Stephan El Shaarawy’s 13th-minute opener and an 87th-minute effort from Marsh Kumbulla. It was a very professional performance from Jose Mourinho’s side as they were clinical in front of goal, scoring twice from just three shots on goal, and restricted Real Sociedad to just one attempt on goal in the entire ninety minutes of play.

Three days after the defeat, Imanol Alguacil’s side were held to a 1-1 draw away to Mallorca in the La Liga, despite the fact that Carlos Fernandez put them ahead inside the opening three minutes. The result allowed Atletico Madrid to overtake White-Blue into third spot. The Basque Club are now sitting at the fourth position in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 45 points from 23 games, just three clear of fifth-placed Real Betis. Meanwhile, the San Sebastian side has never made it further than the quarter-finals of either the Europa League or its predecessor the UEFA cup.

Roma, on the other hand, are aiming to secure consecutive European titles, having clinched the Conference League trophy last season. Jose Mourinho’s side beat RB Salzburg 2-1 on aggregate in the playoff tie last month and now have one step firmly in the last-8 stage of Europe’s second tier tournament. Meanwhile the Portuguese tactician has an impeccable record when it comes to European competition, having lost just two of his 16 games in the knockout phase. But the Wolves are heading into the match on the back of a 4-3 Serie A-defeat to Sassuolo on Sunday, despite the fact that Nicola Zalewski, Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum found the back of the net in Rome.
