Since the thrilling 5-2 victory at Anfield three weeks ago, Carlo Ancelotti’s side went on a three-game winless streak across all competitions, before getting the better of Espanyol 3-1 in La Liga this weekend.
Real Madrid will be looking to seal their place in the quarter-finals of Champions League when they host Liverpool at Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night. The first leg at Anfield on February 21 ended 5-2 in favour of Los Blancos. The Reds raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 14 minutes, courtesy of efforts from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. But the La Liga giants responded brilliantly to level the score through Vinicius Junior’s brace, before Eder Militao’s header put them ahead early in the second half, and then Karim Benzema’s late double sealed a historic victory in England.

Since the thrilling victory at Anfield , Carlo Ancelotti’s side went on a three-game winless streak across all competitions, before getting the better of Espanyol 3-1 in the league this weekend. Los Blancos secured all three points against Espanyol, thanks to first-half efforts from Vinicius and Militao, and Marco Asenso’s 93rd-minute strike. Real Madrid are currently occupying second spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 56 points from 25 games, nine adrift of leaders Barcelona. Meanwhile, from the 27 times that Real Madrid have won the first leg of a Champions League tie away from home, they have progressed from 26 of them.
Liverpool, on the other hand, need to overturn a three-goal deficit against the reigning champions to keep themselves alive in the continental stage. After a thumping 7-0 victory against Manchester United at home last week, Jurgen Klopp’s side were quickly brought down to earth, losing 1-0 away to Bournemouth this weekend. Phillip Billing’s 28th-minute effort separated the two sides at Vitality Stadium and handed the Reds their eighth league-defeat of the season. Liverpool are currently sitting at the sixth position, with 42 points to their name from 26 games, six adrift of the top-four.
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who missed the game against Espanyol on Saturday, is likely to return to the playing eleven, joining Vinicius and Federico Valverde up front. Defender David Alaba is nursing a thigh issue, therefore Dani Carvajal, Militao, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez might form the back-four. As for Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz, Calvin Ramsey and Joe Gomez are occupying the medical room.
Real Madrid Probable line-up: Courtois, Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Nacho, Modric, Tchouameni, Kroos, Valverde, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.
Liverpool Probable line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Salah, Jota, Nunez, Gakpo
