The third El Clasico of this season is set to take place on Thursday, with Real Madrid hostsing Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at Santiago Bernabeu. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of not so great results in their respective league-games last time out. The hosts played out a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, while Barca suffered a shock 1-0 defeat away to Almeria, a day later. Despite the loss, Blaugrana are still occupying top spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 59 points from 23 games, seven clear of second-placed Real Madrid.

Real Madrid defeated city rivals Atletico Madrid 3-1 in the last-eight, thanks to Rodrygo’s 79th-minute equaliser and extra-time efforts from Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr, to progress this far.  Despite being the most successful team in Europe, with 14 Champions League triumphs, Los Blancos have incredibly not won the Copa del Rey title since the 2013-14 campaign. Last season, Carlo Ancelotti’s side won the Champions League and the La Liga, but lost out to Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-final stage of the domestic Cup competition. This time around, a quadruple is still a distinct possibility heading into the spring months. Meanwhile, Real Madrid were forced to share the spoils at home to  Atletico in their last outing, despite playing against 10-men for more than 25 minutes.  Jose Gimenez broke the deadlock for the Red and Whites, 12 minutes from time, before Real Madrid equalised through Alvaro’s 85th-minute effort. 

Barcelona, on the other hand, are going through a rough patch, having lost back-to-back games in their last two outings across all competitions. After losing 2-1 to Manchester United in the second leg of their Europa League playoff tie last Thursday, Xavi’s side traveled to Estadio Mediterraneo for a La Liga match this Sunday, hoping to get back to winning ways. However, El Bilal Toure’s lone goal inside the opening 24 minutes handed Barca their second league-defeat of the season. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Copa del Rey, Blaugrana edged past 10-man Real Sociedad in the quarters, last month, thanks to Ousmane Dembele’s 52nd-minute strike.

Probable Lineups

Real Madrid full back Ferland Mendy suffered a thigh injury against Atletico Madrid last time out, and has joined the likes of Rodrygo and David Alaba in the treatment room. Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Luka Modric might partner Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni in the engine room. As for Barcelona, talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski sustained a hamstring injury in the weekend loss to Almeria and will not be available for the El Clasico on Thursday. Dembele and Pedri are also occupying the treatment room because of thigh problems. Ferran Torres might lead the line, alongside Gavi and Raphinha.
