The latest edition of Madrid derby is set to take place at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening, with Real Madrid hosting Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Real Madrid’s chances of successfully defeating their La Liga title looks bleak as the Blaugrana have managed to build a strong lead at the top. And since Barca are out of Europa League, their primary focus would be to secure the league title. Los Blancos on the other hand, fought back from two goals down to defeat Liverpool at Anfield, thanks to a brace each from Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema, and one goal from Eder Militao. Carlo Ancelotti’s side now have one foot firmly in the quarter-finals of the Champions League as they welcome the Red for the second leg of the last-16 tie next month. Meanwhile, Real will also have one eye on their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg with Barcelona on March 2. Prior to the win in England, Los Blancos defeated Osasuna 2-0 in the league, courtesy of late goals from Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio. It was their 16th top flight victory of the season.
Atletico, on the other hand, edged past Athletic Bilbao last Saturday, thanks to Antonie Griezmann’s lone goal 17 minutes from time. It was Diego Simeone’s side’s 12th La Liga-win of the season. Meanwhile, the Red and Whites are not playing in European football, having been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage, and were also eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid in the quarter-final. Therefore, Simeone’s side only have La Liga to worry about for the rest of the season, and their full focus will be on claiming at least a top-four finish.
Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Aurelien Tchouameni is back in the squad after recovering from an illness. Meanwhile, defender David Alaba and attacker Rodrygo suffered injuries against Liverpool and have been ruled out of the Madrid derby. Benzema will continue to lead the line, with Vinicius and Valverde in support. As for Atletico, centre-back Stefan Savic is set to return after serving a one-match suspension against Athletic Club, while midfielder Rodrigo de Paul and Thomas Lemar are occupying the treatment room. Alvaro Morata will partner Griezmann up front.
Real Madrid probable line-up: Courtois, Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Nacho, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Kroos, Valverde, Benzema, Vinicius
Atletico Madrid Probable line-up: Oblak, Molina, Savic, Harmoso, Reinildo, Llorente, Barrios, Koke, Carrasco, Griezmann, Morata
