Manchester City will host Liverpool in a blockbuster Premier League fixture at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 6-0 win over Burnley in the FA Cup quarterfinal match, before the international break, while Liverpool suffered a narrow 1-0 Champions League-defeat away to Real Madrid. Last season’s top two teams are chasing different targets heading into the latter stages of the season, with the Cityzens bidding to close the gap on leaders Arsenal and the Reds battling to make the top four.

The reigning Premier League champions are currently occupying second spot in the standings, having collected 61 points from 27 games, eight adrift of leaders Arsenal who have played an extra match. Pep Guardiola’s side’s last league-match against Crystal Palace on March 11 ended in a 1-0 win thanks to Erling Haaland’s 78th-minute penalty-kick. It was their 19th top flight victory of the season. After that, Man City put seven goals past RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, mid-way through March, and secured a 8-1 aggregate-win. Last time out, Guardiola’s men put six goals past Championship-leaders Burnley without reply at Etihad Stadium. Haaland scored a hat-trick, before Julian Alvarez netted either side of Cole Palmer’s effort to help Man City book a meeting with Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final stage.

Before the international break, Liverpool followed up a stunning 7-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford with back-to-back 1-0 defeats against Bournemouth and Real Madrid. The loss to Los Blancos at Santiago Bernabeu confirmed their elimination from the Champions League last-16. Meanwhile, the defeat to Bournemouth on March 11 was their eighth top flight loss of the campaign. The Reds have recorded 12 wins and six draws from 27 league-games to collect 47 points, and are sitting at the sixth position in the English top flight standings, seven points adrift of the top four. Meanwhile, on a positive note, the reverse fixture in October ended 1-0 in favour of Liverpool thanks to Mohamed Salah’s second-half effort.
