Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was unable to hide his disappointment following their stunning loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday. The Reds were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium. This result saw the Reds’ top four hopes hanging by a thread. They needed the win to maintain their push for Champions League football. However, the loss will come as a major setback for the Reds.

Henderson was not happy with the way Liverpool started the second half, as they conceded couple of quickfire goals. “I think that was a big moment in the match and we didn’t react well after the second goal,” Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com after the match. “[We] didn’t defend it well enough. From then the game sort of ran away from us.”

‘From the second goal they dominated the game’

“In the end we couldn’t get anywhere near City. We’re disappointed [with the] second half and that decided the game. It’s very difficult. That’s what they’re good at when they go in the lead, they keep the ball away and wait for the right moments. It’s really difficult to press and try to win the ball back – from the second goal they dominated the game.”

However, Henderson does not want to spend too much time on this disappointment and wants the team to react in the right manner. Liverpool are set to play another important game against Chelsea in a couple of days’ time. “We’ve got to try to keep going,” he explained. “There were good moments in the first half. If we’re being critical, we probably should go 2-0 up – or at least score a second goal.

“We weren’t ruthless enough in either our box or their box, and that’s where the game [was] decided really. Overall, a really disappointing day, but the games come round thick and fast and you can’t be too down. You have got to try to react in the right way, try to use the positives and try to be better in the things we didn’t do well and keep going.”

Jurgen Klopp reacts to the second half performance

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was also not happy with the start to the second half. Asked whether he could explain the start to the second period, Klopp in his post-match press conference, said, “No, I cannot. You don’t know 100 per cent if the team started like this or a player started like that or whatever. I have no clue why we didn’t have the challenge there when the ball was open.”

“No foul, nothing, just no challenge. Really difficult to understand. When you let them on the ball and they can cut inside and pass the ball and use their speed and the formation and all of that, then it is not about mental stuff in that moment – you just try to sort the things you can sort. It was not possible there. No, I don’t think it is really to explain, but we all saw what we saw.”
