Liverpool play host to Real Madrid in a mouth-watering Champions League round-of-16 contest on Tuesday night. This highly-anticipated fixture is a repeat of last year’s Champions League final when Madrid defeated the Reds thanks to the only goal of the game by Vinicius Junior. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also produced a stunning display making improbable saves to deny Jurgen Klopp’s side from scoring on that night.

Almost a year later, Liverpool will be desperate for revenge. However, form is not on their side. The Reds might have won their last two matches in the Premier League but their overall recent form has been alarming, which has seen them drop too far behind the top four places. Besides, the Reds have to overcome the injury concerns to some of their key players and produce a top-notch performance at Anfield in order to beat the European champions.

In Champions League Group A, Liverpool were only able to manage a second-place finish behind leaders Napoli. However, Real Madrid topped Group F. One thing is clear though – they both are not where they would like to be in their respective league standings. Liverpool are languishing down at eight in the Premier League table with 35 points from 22 games, while Real Madrid are sitting second in the La Liga table with 51 points from 22 matches – eight points behind leaders Barcelona.

Possible lineups

Both sides will be heading into this match with some major injury doubts in their ranks. Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United at the weekend was overshadowed by Darwin Nunez’s injury. It remains unclear at this moment whether the tall centre-forward would be able to play some part in this game. However, they have Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino back in contention so the Reds should have able replacements if required.

Besides, they will miss Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Thiago Alcantara and Calvin Ramsay for this contest. On the other hand, Real Madrid will be sweating over the fitness situation of the Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema. Even though he missed the match against Osasuna, Benzema is expected to be a part of this game. Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni’s participation is also in doubt for the visitors. One thing is clear – Ferland Mendy will definitely be out of this contest.

Liverpool possible line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Bajcetic, Henderson, Salah, Jota, Gakpo

Real Madrid possible line-up: Courtois, Carvajal, Militao, Rudiger, Alaba, Camavinga, Ceballos, Modric, Valverde, Vinicius Jr, Benzema
