Hungary will be looking to start their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on a positive note when they host Bulgaria at Puskas Arena Park on Monday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Estonia in a friendly on Friday, while Bulgaria were beaten 1-0 by Montenegro in their opening Group G fixture. The previous encounter between these two nations was back in 2020 in the UEFA Nations League, which ended 3-1 in favour of Hungary courtesy of goals from Willi Orban, Zsolt Kalmar and Nemanja Mikolics.
Hungarian football have been going through a fruitful period, having qualified for the final of the last two editions of European Championship, reaching the last-16 in 2020. Although Magyar failed to earn a tick to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, they had a stunning UEFA Nations League campaign last year, securing second position in Group 3, with 10 points to their name from six games, ahead of Germany and England, and just one point behind Italy. Marco Rossi’s men did a double against the Three Lions, that included a 4-0 thrashing at Molineux Stadium and took four points from a possible six against Germany. Meanwhile, on Thursday, National Eleven edged past Estonia in a friendly, courtesy of Martin Adam’s lone goal in the first half.
Bulgaria, on the other hand, lost out to Montenegro in their opening match of the qualification campaign on Friday. Nikola Krostovic’s 70th-minute effort separated the two sides at Ludogorets Arena. Mladen Krstajic’s side had almost 65% of ball possession but failed to create anything meaningful going forward. The results ended the Lions’ six-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. With Serbia being the favourites to secure top spot in the group, Hungary and Bulgaria are expected to battle it out for the second automatic qualification position.
