Both sides were previously in action in the Africa Nations Championship in January, with the hosts losing out to Niger 1-0 in the last eight stage, while Angola played out a 0-0 draw against Mauritania in their final group-match.
Ghana play host to Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday. This will be the Black Stars’ first outing under new head coach Chris Hughton. Meanwhile both sides were previously in action in the Africa Nations Championship in January, with the hosts losing out to Niger 1-0 in the quarter-final stage, while Angola couldn’t progress from their group, having played out two draws against Mali (3-3) and Mauritania (0-0). The previous meeting between these two nations was way back in 2010 in the Africa Cup on Nations and Ghana secured a narrow 1-0 win thanks to Asamoah Gyan’s goal.

Ghana had a disappointing Africa Nations Championship as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Madagascar in their opening group-match against Madagascar, and then got eliminated in the last eight stage, after losing 2-0 to Niger, courtesy of goals from Imarana Seyni and Boubacar Hainikoye. Now their focus will be to secure a 10th consecutive AFCON qualification. The four-time AFCON winners kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 3-0 thrashing of Madagascar in June 2022, but the were held to a 1-1 draw by Central African Republic four days later.
Angola, on the other hand, couldn’t progress from their group in the Africa Nations Championship, having picked up just two points from their three matches. Like Ghana, the Black Antelopes have picked up four points from their two AFCON qualifying matches so far, having defeated Central African Republic 2-1 in their first outing before sharing the spoils against Madagascar (1-1). The Black Stars and Angola are currently separated by only goal-difference at the top of Group E, making this mid-week fixture nice poised. Meanwhile each of the last six encounters between these two nations have ended in favour of Ghana.
