Burnley will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Sunderland in an EFL Championship fixture at Turf Moor on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a disappointing 6-0 FA Cup-defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City before the international break on March 18, while Sunderland played out a 1-1 draw against Luton Town in the second tier. Burnely are comfortably sitting at the summit of the English second tier standings, having collected 83 points from 37 games, 13 clear of the chasing pack, while the visitors, who have played an extra match, are occupying 11th position, with 53 points to their name.

Vincent Kompany’s men lost to his former side at Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup quarter-final courtesy of Erling Haaland’s hat-trick, Julian Alvarez’s brace and one goal from Cole Palmer. The result ended Burnley’s 18-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Now, the Clarets can focus on securing immediate return to the top flight as soon as possible. Prior to the Loss to Man City, Kompany’s side defeated Hull City 3-1 on March 15 thanks to Nathan Tella’s hat-trick. it was their 24th league-win of the season. The Clarets are currently on a 17-game unbeaten streak in the second tier and three points on Friday will take them within six points of a return to the Premier League. Meanwhile, Burnley are undefeated in 19 league-matches at Turf Moor this term, recording 14 wins and five draws from those games.

Sunderland, on the other hand, are sitting seven points shy of the top-six. The Black Cats’ promotions challenge has started to peter out, having collected just five points from their last seven matches. Last time out, Tony Mowbray’s side came from behind to earn a point against Luton Town thanks to Amad Diallo’s 86th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot. The Rocker Men have recorded 14 wins, 11 draws and 13 defeats from 38 second tier games this season. Meanwhile, Sunderland have collected 29 points from a possible 57 on the road.
