Benfica are just one step away from reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League in back-to-back seasons for the first time in their 119-year history. Last season, the Eagles were dumped out of the last-eight stage of Europe’s elite club competition by Liverpool, after suffering a 6-4 aggregate defeat. Meanwhile, when it comes to the league campaign, Roger Schmidt’s side are comfortably sitting at the summit of the Portuguese top flight standings, having collected 62 points from 23 games, eight clear of the chasing pack. Last time out, The Reds defeated Famalicao on Saturday, courtesy of Goncalo Ramos’ brace.
Club Brugge, on the other hand, didn’t have the best of preparations coming into the crucial European match, having suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat away to Oostende in the league on Friday. It was the Blue-Black’s fourth league-defeat of the season, pushing Scott Parker’s side down to sixth position in the Belgian top flight standings. Following the defeat, Parker conceded that he was not sure if he would still be in the job for Tuesday’s away leg.
Benfica’s injury list consists of Mihailo Ristic, Julian Draxler and Chiquinho, while Wolverhampton loanee Goncalo Guedes is nursing a sore knee and may not be risked for Tuesday’s fixture. Last-game’s double-goal hero Ramos will continue to spearhead the attack, with Mario, R. Silva and Neres in support. As for Club Brugge, Danish midfielder Andreas Skov Olsen is recovering from appendix surgery, Jutgla is expected to be the target-man up front, with Lang and Buchanan occupying the flanks.
Benfica Probable line-up: Vlachodimos, Bah, Otamendi, A-Silva, Grimaldo, Aursnes, Florentino, Mario, R. Silva, Neres, Ramos
Club Brugge Probable line-up: Mignolet, Mata, Mechele, Sylla, Meijer, Odoi, Onyedika, Buchanan, Vanaken, Lang, Jutgla
