The hosts suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen in their last outing before the international break, while Dortmund thrashed FC Koln 6-1.
Bayern Munich host arch rivals Borussia Dortmund in a crucial Bundesliga fixture at Allianz Arena on Saturday. The recent run of form has helped the visitors to climb to the top of the German top flight standings, having collected 53 points from 25 games, just one clear of second-placed Bayern, who saw Julian Naglesmann ruthlessly sacked and replaced by ex-Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel following the downturn. The hosts suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in their last outing before the international break, while BVB thrashed FC Koln 6-1.

Just five wins from their last ten top flight games since the turn of the year has let Bayern’s vice-like grip on the Bundesliga summit slip before the international break. Last time out, Bavarians lost to Leverkusen at Bay Arena despite taking the lead through Joshua Kimmich inside the opening 22 minutes. It was their sixth league-defeat of the season. Prior to that, Bayern defeated Augsburg 5-3 to secure their 17th top flight victory of the campaign thanks to Benjamin Pavard’s brace and one goal each from Joao Cancelo, Leroy Sane and Alphonse Davies. Meanwhile, new boss Tuchel showed great respect to his former club and the current league-leaders as he stated that “there is no bigger challenge” than begining his Bayern tenure in Der Klassiker. On a positive note, Bayern are one of just two teams still unbeaten on home soil, and they are Germany’s last remaining representative in the UEFA champions League, a competition Tuchel has previously won with Chelsea.
Dortmund, on the other hand, have won nine of their last ten games in 2023, while dropping points only against Schalke (2-2) on March 11. Last time out, Edin Terzic’s side netted six times against Koln courtesy of goals from Raphael Guerreiro, Sebastian Haller, Marco Reus and Donyell Malen. BVB have now racked up a division-high 30 goals in 2023 and posted 10 more points than Bayern over that period. Although eight of the last nine Der Klassiker ended in favour of Bayern, the reverse fixture in October saw Dortmund come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Signal Iduna Park, thanks to Youssoufa Moukoko’s 74th-minute effort and Anthony Modeste’s dramatic 95th-minute equaliser.
