Bayern Munich supporters were in for a major shock when it was announced recently that their manager Julian Nagelsmann was going to be sacked. It is not a development many saw coming. Even though Bayern are not sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table, the German giants are only one point behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. Besides, in the Champions League, Bayern have been in stellar form, easing past all the tough challenges that have come their way in the competition.

Hence, it was a big surprise to see the young coach being let go from the hot seat. The 35-year-old Nagelsmann was swiftly replaced by former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. The German coach has already created a good reputation by winning the Champions League with the Premier League side. His teams are also known for playing a compact style of football and are very difficult for opponents to break down. On Saturday, Tuchel was unveiled at a press conference with CEO Oliver Kahn and board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić.

‘It’s about approaching the task with confidence’

Speaking about the goals for the season, Tuchel, quoted by fcbayern.com, said, “We have to build on the starting position that Julian has created with the team, that we have a chance of winning the trophy in all three competitions. There are risks involved, of course. But we love the pressure and the stress. My love for the game is much greater than any concerns. It’s about approaching the task with confidence – we want to be contenders for all three trophies.”

Tuchel then switched his attention to the star-studded Bayern Munich squad. “Of course I know the squad and the performances, I kept watching football because it makes my day nicer when I watch football. I didn’t think about it for a time, that’s what I got into the habit of doing, you have to wait and be patient. Then on Tuesday night I started thinking about the squad for the first time. The opinion in England or Paris of Bayern Munich is extremely high. Nobody likes to play against Bayern Munich. The size, the strength of the club, is undisputed. The league in England is of course exceptional, the biggest challenge in Europe. But Bayern’s squad would compete for the title in the Premier League, in terms of breadth and depth,” he explained.

Thomas Tuchel on Julian Nagelsmann

Thomas Tuchel was also asked about his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann. Speaking about him, Tuchel replied, “I can understand that it feels very humbling for Julian. It’s not my responsibility, so I’m allowing myself to approach the task full of anticipation and energy. I’m not going to talk to Julian directly because I want to approach the task with an open mind.”

The German coach then went on to explain about how he looks to approach the difficult task at hand when preparing the team for the final weeks of the season. “I’m a fan of sorting it out on the training pitch. It’s a big upheaval when a head coach leaves,” he added. “The quickest way to gain trust is to go directly onto the pitch. It’s clear that group discussions and feedback from the players are also on the agenda. Ultimately, it helps everyone to get out on the pitch to build anticipation for Saturday night. It’s a huge game for all of us, even in this constellation. It’s a matter of building confidence and anticipation.”

“We don’t really have much time. I’ll probably not see the international players until Friday. It’s surprising timing, also because in all three competitions the title is still a possibility. So less is more, it will be about details. I have an idea of what can be done and a lot of anticipation. It’s about playing for all the trophies.”
