The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 win against Athletic Club in their final pre-season friendly of the summer last Saturday, while Nottingham Forest played out a 1-1 draw against Valencia on the same day. Newcastle United had a brilliant second half of the Premier League campaign last term, winning 12 of their last 19 games to finish in 11th place. Forest, on the other hand, finished fourth in the 2021-22 Championship table, before getting the better of Sheffield United and Huddersfield to earn promotion to the top tier of English football.

Newcastle had an impressive pre-season, winning four of their six friendlies this summer. In their recent match against Athletic Club, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin netted for the Magpies to secure the win. Eddie Howe’s side netted 13 times and conceded just 6 in those six friendlies. The Magpies have signed goalkeeper Nick Pope from Burnley while also adding the likes of defenders Sven Botman from Lille and Matt Target from Aston Villa. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, have been very busy in the transfer market making more than 10 summer signings. However, the new acquisitions haven’t had a great impact on the club’s results so far, as Forest managed to record just two wins from their seven pre-season friendlies.

Newcastle United boss Howe is likely to hand competitive debuts to Pope and Botman. Wilson is likely to lead the line with Almiron and Saint-Maximin occupying the flanks. Sean Longstaff could sit in front of the back-four allowing Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes to play an advanced role in the middle of the park. As for Nottingham Forest, Jesse Lingard, who joined the club from Manchester United this summer, is likely to be a key player in the attacking department. Johnson and Surridge are expected to be the strike-partners.
