The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, while Leicester edged past Gillingham 1-0 on the same day to to enter fourth round.
Newcastle United will host Leicester City in an EFL Cup quarter-final fixture at St James’s Park on Tuesday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting FA Cup results at the weekend. The hosts suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and exited the Cup competition, while Leicester edged past Gillingham 1-0 to enter the next round. Nevertheless, Newcastle are enjoying a remarkable Premier League season under the stewardship of Eddie How as they are sitting at the third spot in the English top tier standings, having collected 35 points from 18 games. The Foxes, on the other hand, are occupying 13th position in the table, with 17 points to their name.

Newcastle’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday was their first one in their last 15 competitive games across all competitions. Prior to this, their only defeat this season came against Leiverpool on September 1. However, Eddie Howe’s side failed to get the better of the English third tier side despite recording more than 75% of ball possession and creating 22 goal-scoring chances on Saturday. Josh Windass netted a double for the Owls, before Newcastle pulled one back through Bruno Guimaraes. Nevertheless, the Magpies still have the EFL Cup in their sights. To reach this stage of the competition, Howe’s men defeated Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace and AFC Bournemouth.
Leicester, on the other hand, got the better of Stockport County, Newport County and MK Dons to get this far in the competition. In the previous round, the Foxes thrashed MK Dons 3-0, courtesy of goals from Youri Tielemans, Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy. Although Brendan Rodgers’ side haven’t had a great League campaign thus far, having won just five matches, they have fared pretty well in the Cup competitions. Last time out, Leicester progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup, courtesy of defeating Gillingham through Kelechi Iheanacho’s lone goal in the 56th-minute.

Newcastle boss Howe is likely to opt for a much stronger lineup compared to the team that started in the defeat of the Owls. First choice goalkeeper Nick Pope might come back in the starting eleven, with Manquillo, Lascelles, Botman and Lewis forming the four-man defence in front of him. Meanwhile, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is sidelined with a calf injury. As for Leicester, Dennis Praet and James Maddison are occupying the treatment room, therefore Wilfred Ndidi and Youri Tielemans might occupy the engine room, with Albrighton and Perez occupying the flanks.
Newcastle United possible line-up: Pope, Manquillo, Lascelles, Botman, Lewis, Almiron, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Ritchie, Murphy, Wood
Leicester City possible line-up: Ward, Castagne, Amartey, Soyuncu, Thomas, Ndidi, Tielemans, Albrighton, Perez, Iheanacho, Daka
