Newcastle United will host Crystal Palace in an EFL Cup fixture at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of Premier League wins on Sunday. The Magpies secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Southampton, while Crystal Palace got the better of West Ham United 2-1. Newcastle have moved to the third spot in the English top flight standings, having collected 27 points from 14 games, seven points adrift of the leaders Arsenal. The Eagles, meanwhile, have a game in hand and are sitting at the 10th spot with 19 points to their name.

Newcastle have been in stunning form, having won all of their last four games, scoring 11 goals and conceding just two in that period. Last time out against Southampton, goals from Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes helped the Megpies record their seven league-win of the season. Eddie Howe’s side had to battle their way through to this stage of the tournament, recording a 2-1 win away at League Two outfit Tranmere Rovers.

Palace, on the other hand, came from behind to get the better of West Ham in a dramatic fashion. Said Benrahma put the Hammers ahead inside the opening 20 minutes before Wilfried Zaha equalised for Palace, four minutes before the break. Just when it looked like the match might end in a draw Michael Olise struck the winner in the 94th-minute. It was Patrick Vieira’s side’s fifth league-win of the campaign. The Eagles are now seven points clear of the relegation zone.
