The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat at Benfica, while Atalanta thrashed Como 4-0 in their recent outing. The Magpies had an impressive Premier League season last term finishing 11th in the standings, just seven points away from a Europa conference League qualification. The visitors, on the other hand, finished 8th in the 2021-22 Serie A table, just two points adrift of a UECL qualification. Atalanta are preparing to participate in their third friendly of the summer, while the Magpies are getting ready for their fifth pre-season friendly.

Newcastle have had an impressive pre-season so far, winning three of their four friendlies, starting with a 5-1 win over Gateshead, got the better of 1860 Munich (3-0) and Mainz (1-0) before suffering their first defeat at Benfica. Eddie Howe’ side has managed to score nine goals and conceded just two in the pre-season so far and looking well on course to achieve bigger things in the 2022-23 edition of Premier League, starting with a match against newly promoted Nottingham Forest at home on August 6. The Magpies have bolstered their squad by bringing in Nick Pope and Sven Botman, while Matt Targett’s move from Aston Villa has been made permanent. Newcastle will next play Athletic Bilbao in their final friendly of the summer on Saturday.
Atalanta, on the other hand, began their pre-season with a dominant 12-1 win over Gambarogno- Contone, before putting four goals past Como without reply. Last Saturday, at Breda Stadium Milano, Jose Luis Palomino, Ederson, Nadir Zortea and Sam Lammers netted for the Black and Blues. The Goddess will also take on Valencia on August 7 before beginning their new Serie A season away to Sampdoria on August 13.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is sidelined with an injury therefore new signing Nick pope could occupy the goal. The front three of Wilson, Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have been in sublime form and are likely to retain their place in the starting eleven. Botman is expected to start at the heart of the defence alongside Lascelles with Trippier operating down the right channel. As for Atalanta, Gasperini has rotated his squad heavily throughout the pre-season games. Luis Muriel could lead the attack with Jereme Boga. New arrival Merih Demiral could feature at the back alongside Okoli and Toloi in the three-man defence.
