Argentina and Netherlands will go head-to-head in the most exciting quarter-final fixture of the 2022 World Cup at Lusail Stadium on Friday. Oranje are heading into the match on the back of a convincing 3-1 victory over USA in their round of 16 match on Saturday, while La Albiceleste got the better of Australia 2-1 to keep their title hopes alive, on the same day. Both sides didn’t have a comfortable group stage as they failed to produce their A-game and had to wait till the final group-match to secure qualification to the knockouts. The South American champions began their campaign with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opener, before getting the better of Mexico and Poland with a similar scoreline of 2-0, to enter the last-16. Netherlands, meanwhile, started off with a 2-0 win over Senegal, before being held to a 1-1 draw by Ecuador , and then defeated hosts Qatar 2-0 to progress to the knockouts.

Netherlands defeated USA in their last outing, courtesy of goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Dlind and Denzel Dumfries. Dumfries provided identical assists for identical goals in the first half, before slotting home from Blind’s assist in the second half to seal the win. Indeed, the Netherlands have now reached the last-8 in four of their last five World Cups. Argentina, on the other hand, had finished runner-ups in 2014, before losing out to eventual champions France in the last-16 stage, four years later in Russia. Meanwhile, Lionel Scaloni’s side were made to sweat in their last match against Australia on Saturday. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in his trademark fashion before Julian Alvarez doubled the lead for Argentina. The Socceross pulled one back through Craig Goodwin’s deflected strike and managed to test Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the final quarter, but ended up in the losing side.
The last meeting between these two power houses of world football was in the semi-finals of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Both sides canceled each other out and failed to break the deadlock, and thereby the match went to penalties, where Argentina prevailed 4-2 winners. Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero denied Wesley Sneijder and Ron Vlaar from the penalty spot, while all four of Argentina players, including Messi, converted the spot-kick to take La Albiceleste to the final. Prior to that, the two nations faced each other in the group-stages of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, which ended in yet another goalless draw.
