Mumbai City FC sign 21-year-old goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz

Nawaz was a key member of FC Goa's set-up after playing an important role in the club's successful seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Indian Super League (ISL) club Mumbai City FC have signed goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz to the club. The defending ISL champions have signed the 21-year-old on a three-year contract until May 2024. Nawaz, a product of the AIFF Elite Academy, joined FC Goa in 2018. He played for the club’s reserve team in the I-League 2nd Division. He then made his first-team debut during the 2018-19 season.

The 21-year-old shot stopper was a key member of Gaurs’ set-up. He played an important role in FC Goa’s successful seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20. That season saw the club win the Super Cup and the League Winners’ Shield. In his first two seasons with the Goan side, he kept nine clean sheets in 33 appearances. The Manipur-born player, who represented India at the 2016 BRICS U-17 tournament, made 10 appearances for FC Goa in their run to the semifinals in the 2020-21 season.

In his first two seasons, Nawaz had nine clean sheets in 33 matches. Also in the 2020-21 season, he appeared in ten matches for FC Goa.

Nawaz thanked the club for giving him the chance to play for them and fight for trophies. He also said that he was looking forward to getting started on a new chapter of his fledgling career. “I would like to thank Mumbai City FC for showing faith in me and giving me the opportunity to play at a club that wants to win games and win trophies. I had a chance to speak to many of my friends who are now my teammates and they spoke highly of the great culture at the club. I’m looking forward to getting started on this exciting journey with my new family and achieve great things along the way,” Nawaz said.

For the defending champions of the ISL, it has been a busy last couple of months. They have signed a number of players in a bid to retain their title. These include the likes of Australian Bradden Inman, Naocha Singh, Rahul Bheke, Cassio Gabriel, and Lalengmawia Ralte.

Inman could prove to be a significant signing as he is the product of one of the biggest clubs in England. The Aussie, a product of Newcastle United’s youth academy, played football in England for over ten years. He turned out for clubs such as Crewe Alexandra, Peterborough United, and Rochdale AFC. The Adelaide-born player returned to Australia in 2019 to play for A-League club Brisbane Roar. There he scored four goals and assisted five times in 25 appearances in the 2019-20 season.

Brazilian midfielder Cassio Gabriel can also turn out to be an exceptional signing for the defending champions. The 29-year-old began his youth career with Fluminense’s under-20s before moving on to play for Paysandu SC, Bento Goncalves, Guarani, Anapolis, ASEEV-GO, Penapolense, Piracicaba, Sao Bento, Botafogo, and Mirassol before joining Vila Nova in June 2020. Cassio, who can play on the wings and also through the middle as an attacking midfielder, made 12 appearances for Vila Nova and contributed one assist.
